vivo is preparing to expand its flagship smartphone portfolio with the X500 Pro Max, the top-end model in its upcoming X500 series. The new flagship is scheduled to launch in China on September 21, with vivo positioning the series around major advances in smartphone photography, video recording and performance.

The X500 Pro Max has already attracted attention for its camera hardware. vivo has confirmed that the phone will feature a 200-megapixel ZEISS APO super-telephoto camera, making the telephoto system one of the key highlights of the upcoming flagship. The sensor uses a 1/1.4-inch BluePrint design and Samsung's HP0 sensor, along with hardware-based 4x in-sensor zoom technology.

The high-resolution telephoto camera is designed to provide greater flexibility when photographing distant subjects. vivo says the hardware-based in-sensor zoom can provide two stages of lossless zoom while retaining detail. The company has also confirmed support for a 400mm telephoto extender, which can be paired with the phone for considerably longer-range photography.

Stabilisation is another area where vivo is pushing the X500 Pro Max. The phone's imaging system is expected to benefit from CIPA 7.0-rated stabilisation, while vivo's Super Capture Engine can provide up to 30x zoom and is designed to help capture fast-moving subjects. These capabilities could make the Pro Max particularly interesting for sports, concerts, wildlife and other situations where a conventional smartphone telephoto camera can struggle.

The main camera system is also receiving a significant upgrade. vivo has announced its new BluePrint LightGuard 900 sensor for the X500 Pro series, with the company claiming up to 17 stops of dynamic range. The imaging system combines hardware stabilisation, motion sensing and computational processing to improve results in difficult lighting and moving scenes.

Video recording is another major focus of the X500 generation. vivo has revealed support for professional-oriented features including 4K 240fps slow-motion recording, high-dynamic-range video and Log-based workflows. The company is also promoting its updated BluePrint video technology and cinema-oriented colour management as part of the new lineup.

Official images have also provided the first look at the X500 Pro Max's design. The phone appears to use a large circular camera module on the rear, with the camera housing gradually rising from the back panel. The images also show the handset alongside the dedicated telephoto extender and a professional photography grip, reinforcing vivo's focus on the device as a serious mobile imaging tool.

Beyond the camera hardware, several specifications have been reported but are yet to receive full official confirmation. Reports suggest that the X500 Pro Max could feature a 6.85-inch 2K 144Hz AMOLED display, MediaTek's upcoming Dimensity 9600 Pro chipset and a 7,500mAh battery with 90W wired charging. These specifications should be treated as expected rather than final until vivo publishes the complete specification sheet.

The X500 Pro Max will sit alongside the standard X500 and X500 Pro when the series launches in China. Unlike the previous generation, vivo is therefore preparing a three-model flagship lineup, with the Pro Max positioned at the top.

For now, vivo has confirmed the September 21 launch in China, but pricing and complete specifications have not yet been officially announced. Details regarding an international or India launch also remain unconfirmed. The company is expected to reveal more information as it approaches the September 21 event.

With its 200MP ZEISS super-telephoto camera, dedicated 400mm extender and professional video capabilities, the X500 Pro Max is shaping up to be one of vivo's most ambitious camera-focused smartphones yet. The launch event will ultimately determine whether its extensive imaging hardware translates into a meaningful advantage over competing flagship camera phones.
