iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro

Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, giving its flagship lineup one of its more substantial upgrades in recent years. The new Pro models bring a redesigned camera experience, Apple's latest A20 Pro processor, improved thermal management, longer battery life and a new generation of Apple Intelligence features.

Rather than focusing on a single headline upgrade, Apple has made changes across the areas that matter most on a premium smartphone. The 48MP Fusion Main camera now has a variable aperture, the A20 Pro moves to a 2nm-class design with dedicated Neural Accelerators, and the Pro Max gets Apple's longest battery life yet.

The camera is arguably the most noticeable change. The 48MP Fusion Main camera can automatically adjust its aperture between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4, allowing the phone to balance light gathering and depth of field depending on the scene. That gives the iPhone 18 Pro greater flexibility in low-light photography while also allowing photographers to control how much of a scene remains in focus.

Apple has also upgraded the rest of the rear camera system. Both Pro models feature 48MP main, 48MP ultrawide and 48MP telephoto cameras, with the telephoto offering 4x and 8x optical-quality focal lengths. The company has added new Pro controls and expanded Photographic Styles with greater control over texture and grain, giving users more room to shape the final image without relying entirely on automatic processing.

For creators, the camera improvements extend beyond still photography. Apple is positioning the iPhone 18 Pro as a more capable video-production device, with upgraded computational photography, professional controls and improved handling of colour and depth. The emphasis is less on adding another camera and more on giving users greater control over the cameras already built into the phone.

Under the hood, the two models are powered by the A20 Pro, Apple's new flagship mobile processor. It uses a new 2nm process and combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the GPU can deliver up to 40 percent higher performance than the previous generation, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50 percent.

The processor is paired with a redesigned thermal system. Apple has introduced a larger next-generation vapour chamber, with three times the surface area of the previous generation, to help the phone maintain performance during demanding workloads. That should matter most during sustained gaming, video processing and on-device AI tasks, where peak benchmark performance is less important than how long the phone can maintain it.

AI is another important part of the upgrade. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship with iOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence, including the new Siri AI. Apple says the redesigned assistant can use personal context, understand what's on the screen and take actions across supported apps. Siri AI is rolling out in beta, with availability depending on language and region.

Connectivity has also received an update. Apple has introduced its C2 cellular modem, which it says can improve cellular reliability and provide faster uploads in selected markets while using less power than the previous modem. Both phones also use Apple's N1 wireless networking chip with support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

The displays remain familiar in size, with the iPhone 18 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display and the iPhone 18 Pro Max using a larger 6.9-inch panel. Both support ProMotion with refresh rates of up to 120Hz. Apple has also redesigned the Dynamic Island to display more information at once, including up to three Live Activities.

Battery life is another area where the Pro Max stands apart. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 43 hours of video playback, four hours more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The new battery design is combined with efficiency improvements from the A20 Pro, while faster wired charging can take the phone to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a compatible adapter.

The new Pro models use an aluminium unibody design and come in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. Storage starts at 256GB and goes all the way up to 2TB, giving Apple a higher-capacity option for users who regularly shoot high-resolution photos and video.

In India, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for 256GB, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. The 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions cost progressively more, with the top-end Pro Max reaching ₹3,29,900. Both models are available in the same four colours and storage configurations.

Pre-orders opened in India on September 12 at 5:30 PM IST, with retail availability beginning September 18.

The iPhone 18 Pro generation is therefore less about a radical redesign and more about strengthening the foundations of Apple's premium phone. The variable-aperture camera addresses one of the biggest limitations of smartphone photography, the A20 Pro targets sustained performance and on-device AI, while the Pro Max's battery improvements directly address one of the most practical concerns for users who spend heavily on their phones.

With prices starting well above ₹1.6 lakh in India, the bigger question is whether those improvements justify the premium. For buyers who prioritise photography, video, sustained performance and battery life, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is clearly Apple's most ambitious conventional iPhone yet. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, delivers much of the same hardware in a more compact form factor.
